Peru: Police rescue Ukrainian tourist trapped on Putucusi Mountain, Machu Picchu

Police agents climbed the steep Putucusi Mountain in Machu Picchu district, Peru’s southeastern Cusco region, to rescue a Ukrainian tourist who became trapped during an excursion, the regional police reported.

Agents from the Machu Picchu police station reported that the foreign national, identified as 22-year-old V. Foroshcha had gone missing and become trapped in a hard-to-reach area of Putucusi.

Putucusi is a sacred mountain (Apu) located at one end of the Inca citadel of Machu Picchu.

The incident occurred shortly after noon last Sunday.

After receiving an alert from the Ministry of Culture, law enforcement agents immediately launched a search and climbed the mountain, locating V. Foroshcha approximately 100 meters from the start of the ascent.

Following a coordinated effort, the agents stabilized the tourist and safely escorted him to the railway line.

Subsequently, he was taken to the local healthcare center for a medical evaluation.

Putucusi Mountain is being promoted as a tourist destination for visitors seeking new experiences and an alternative view of the Machu Picchu citadel (Llaqta), overlooking the Vilcanota River.

Machu Picchu municipal authorities are seeking to establish an access route to the summit, at an altitude of more than 2,560 meters above sea level.
