Peru: Judiciary orders five-month preventive detention for Betssy Chavez | Noticias

The Judiciary has revoked former Prime Minister Betssy Chavez’s appearance with restrictions. Likewise, it has ordered five-month preventive detention and issued a nationwide and international arrest warrant as part of the case she faces for rebellion and, alternatively, conspiracy.

Supreme Judge Juan Carlos Checkley declared well-founded the request filed by the Second Special Transitory Supreme Prosecutor’s Office for Crimes Committed by Public Officials.

Thus, the magistrate revoked the appearance with restrictions that the former Prime Minister had been under.

In his ruling, the magistrate ordered five-month preventive detention for Chavez Chino. He also issued a nationwide and international arrest warrant.

The measure had been supported by Supreme Prosecutor Zoraida Avalos.

She requested that Chavez’s appearance with restrictions be replaced by preventive detention in the case the former Prime Minister faces for the alleged crime of rebellion and, alternatively, conspiracy, to the detriment of the Peruvian State.

The court’s decision states: “To declare well-founded the request to revoke the appearance with restrictions and impose preventive detention (…) against the accused Betssy Betzabet Chavez Chino (…) in accordance with Article 287, Section 3, of the Criminal Procedure Code.”

It also specifies: “To order preventive detention for five months against the accused.”

As is known, the government of Mexico granted diplomatic asylum to Chavez, who is currently at its embassy’s residence in Lima.
