The Government of President Keiko Fujimori announced the appointment of Fredy Lopez Mendoza as the new Commander General of the Peruvian National Police (PNP) and reaffirmed its decision to act firmly against crime by strengthening the institution’s operational, technological, and logistical capabilities.

The announcement was made at Government Palace on Sunday evening by Prime Minister Luis Galarreta, who was accompanied by Interior Minister Cesar Astudillo; PNP General Oscar Arriola; and General Staff Chief Fredy Lopez Mendoza.

“We would like to inform you that National Police General Fredy Lopez Mendoza will be appointed to replace General Arriola in the corresponding post. This appointment also involves an institutional transition, I repeat,” Galarreta stated.

The high-ranking official said crime seeks to challenge the country, both as a society and as a State, “but we cannot allow that.”

“This is a time to act firmly, support the constitutional role of our National Police, and provide it with new technological tools and resources,” he emphasized.

The Cabinet chief explained that the decision aims to ensure a respectful transition that upholds institutional continuity and the line of succession within the National Police, following reports that PNP General Oscar Arriola will request retirement.

The Prime Minister underscored that the Government’s objective is to protect citizens’ lives and restore order in the face of criminal organizations that seek to undermine the population’s confidence in their institutions and the rule of law.

“The objective is one and admits no ambiguity: to defend human life and build a safe Peru once and for all,” he said.

Galarreta also announced that the Executive Branch will present new measures and strategies in the coming weeks aimed at strengthening the fight against crime, as part of the initiatives being fostered by President Fujimori’s administration.

In turn, General Arriola confirmed that he will be replaced by Lopez Mendoza in the coming days.
