Peru: Details of case behind request to U.S. to extend Alejandro Toledo’s extradition | Noticias

Former President Alejandro Toledo could face his third trial in Peru after the Supreme Court’s Permanent Criminal Chamber declared admissible a request to have him tried in the country for alleged bribes received from Brazilian construction company Camargo Correa related to the Southern Interoceanic Highway’s Section 4,

The First National Preparatory Investigation Court of the National Superior Court of Specialized Criminal Justice requested the extension of Toledo’s active extradition from U.S. authorities, for his detention and prosecution as an alleged perpetrator of collusion and money laundering to the detriment of the Peruvian State.

The request against the former top official was filed within the framework of the criminal proceedings known as the “Southern Interoceanic Highway Public Project  Section 4.”

In this case, Toledo is under a 30-month pretrial detention order.

The accused allegedly committed collusion by taking advantage of his privileged and high-ranking position within the State apparatus to favor the Brazilian company Camargo Correa S.A. – Peru Branch in the concession process for the “Southern Interoceanic Road Corridor, Peru-Brazil  Section 4 (Inambari-Azangaro)” project.

Under an illicit agreement, the Brazilian construction company allegedly committed to making payments of up to US$6,313,075, of which US$5,411,207 would have been intended for the then-president, equivalent to 3% of the project’s reference value.

Toledo is also accused as co-perpetrator of money laundering, having allegedly, in prior agreement with Josef Maiman, used offshore company bank accounts to conduct complex financial operations aimed at concealing the illicit origin of the funds — linked to bribery payments from Camargo Correa — and avoiding seizure or confiscation.

In this investigation, the Public Ministry (Prosecutor’s Office) is requesting a sentence of 24 years and 8 months in prison for the former Head of State.

Toledo has been in Peru since April 23, 2023, after being extradited from the United States to face prosecution in the South American country for the Southern Interoceanic Highway case, Sections 2 and 3, linked to Brazilian firm Odebrecht.

Subsequently, U.S. authorities extended his extradition so he could be prosecuted in Peru in the “Ecoteva” case.
