Peru and the United States formalized the launch of the Bilateral Space Council —a strategic initiative aimed at promoting science, technology, education, and the space industry through the coordination of both nations’ public, private, and academic sectors.
Also taking part were Peruvian Space Agency Institutional Head Air Force Major General Roberto Melgar; Deputy Minister of Pedagogical Management Miriam Ponce; Florida International University President Jeannette Nuñez; as well as representatives of the Fulbright Commission and the host country’s academic community.
During his remarks, the minister emphasized Peru’s firm commitment to the exploration and peaceful use of outer space.
He stressed that cooperation with the U.S. is key to strengthening national capabilities and applying space sciences in critical areas such as disaster risk management, agriculture, the fight against illicit crops, and deforestation mitigation.
Likewise, the Cabinet member emphasized that President Keiko Fujimori’s Government aims to make the benefits derived from space innovations available to all citizens.
The Bilateral Space Council will help promote education and the development of the talent of new generations of Peruvians in careers related to space science, engineering, and technology.
Moreover, it will strengthen coordination among public and private institutions to generate opportunities and ventures based on U.S. experiences in the commercial space sector.
