Peru and Sweden strengthen bilateral relations during Political Consultations in Stockholm | Noticias

Peru and Sweden held the III Political Consultations Mechanism in Stockholm on May 22, a meeting that helped consolidate bilateral dialogue and reaffirm both countries’ interest in strengthening cooperation in strategic areas.

The meeting took place in a favorable context for bilateral relations, marked by the upcoming reopening of Sweden’s Embassy in Lima, scheduled for August this year, as well as the recent establishment of a Business Sweden trade office in Peru.

Both delegations underscored the continuity of high-level contacts and reaffirmed their commitment to holding this consultations mechanism on a regular basis.

Bilateral trade

The officials highlighted the strong state of bilateral relations, which span more than 170 years of history.

Likewise, they agreed on the need to deepen political, economic, and cooperation ties.

In the economic sphere, both sides highlighted that bilateral trade exceeded US$550 million in 2025, as well as the longstanding presence of Swedish companies in Peru.

Furthermore, the delegations identified opportunities for cooperation and investment in sustainable mining, electric transportation, and digital technologies.

They also expressed interest in expanding the presence of Peruvian products in the Swedish market, particularly the South American country’s agricultural export offerings.

In terms of cooperation, Peru expressed interest in strengthening joint work in science, technology, innovation, and productive development.

Within that framework, the two parties explored initiatives aimed at promoting joint projects and consolidating a concrete cooperation agenda.

Similarly, both sides agreed on the importance of establishing a police cooperation mechanism to strengthen citizen security and combat organized crime.

During the meeting, Sweden reiterated its support for Peru’s goal of becoming a full member of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).

Additionally, both delegations reaffirmed their shared commitment to promoting peaceful solutions to current international crises and strengthening multilateralism.

Meeting with heads of mission

On the eve of the meeting, Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister Felix Denegri chaired a working meeting with the heads of mission of Peruvian embassies in Nordic countries.

At this event, participants coordinated the promotion of national interests in the region, as well as identified cooperation opportunities in areas such as science, innovation, trade, and mining.

The participants also proposed fostering polar cooperation by leveraging the Nordic countries’ scientific expertise and Peru’s research platforms in Antarctica, in line with the Foreign Affairs Ministry strategy to diversify the South American country’s international partners.
