Students advocate for conservation through creative displays at Expo

Jubilee Catholic Secondary School was among the exhibitors at the Papua New Guinea Commodities Expo, showcasing practical ways recycling can be implemented for environmental conservation.

Mrs. Rhondy Ganim, Head of the Science Department at Jubilee Catholic Secondary, commented on the school’s involvement.

“We were given the opportunity to attend the expo, basically for the students to be able to showcase what they have,” she shared.

However, Mrs. Ganim noted a gap in general awareness among the youth regarding national issues: “From what we’ve seen, most of the stuff that is presented here, students still need to have knowledge about what’s going on in the country, especially to do with environment conservation and all this stuff.”

Mrs. Ganim stressed that more education on conservation needs to be integrated into schools so students can learn and become more aware.

Markson Betuels, a Grade 11 student who participated in the exhibition, emphasized the importance of the subject. “Conservation is important as we need to conserve the environment and everything that surrounds us,” he said.

The students’ exhibit focused heavily on marine life impact. They displayed a turtle sculpture made from plastics to illustrate how ocean debris harms the animals.

Furthermore, the students presented a visual representation of a turtle’s digestive system filled with plastic, effectively showing how marine animals consume this waste and where it ultimately settles. Other recyclable items were also on display.
