PNG EMBRACES DIGITAL FUTURE AT 50TH INDEPENDENCE ANNIVERSARY

Tuesday 16th September, 2025

Papua New Guinea marked its 50th Independence Anniversary today with a bold vision for the future, as Prime Minister Hon. James Marape spotlighted digital transformation as a cornerstone of national progress.

Speaking at Independence Hill, Marape declared that Efficiency through AI and ICT will be the backbone of our transformation.

He said PNG must embrace e-governance, digital IDs, land registration, health records, and school enrolments to cut waste, increase transparency, and deliver services.

The Prime Minister’s address emphasized the role of technology in building a more efficient, inclusive, and accountable government.

He outlined plans to digitize public services and modernize infrastructure to ensure connectivity reaches even the most remote communities.

“Children in Karamui, Kotidanga, Telefomin, or Misima must feel as connected as children in Port Moresby,” Marape said.

Reinforcing the government’s commitment to bridging the digital divide.

India was acknowledged as a key partner in supporting PNG’s ICT development, alongside other nations contributing to infrastructure, education, and renewable energy.

As the nation looks ahead to 2045, Marape set ambitious economic targets, aiming for a GDP of K500 billion, powered in part by digital innovation.

“If we stay the course, we will hand over to our children a country stronger, richer, and fairer than ever before,” he affirmed.

The ceremony concluded with a call to unity and hope, as the national flag was raised once again, a symbol of PNG’s enduring spirit and its leap into a tech-driven future.
