ON THIS DAY IN OUR HISTORY: Waigani bomb scare

Public servants working at the Waigani Central Government building were forced to leave their offices at 2:30 pm yesterday following a bomb threat.

Hundreds of workers left their offices and gathered outside as police and sniffer dogs were rushed to the scene.

The whole building was sealed off while policemen searched every office.

Defence Force bomb disposal experts were later called to assist in the search.

A building official said a caller telephoned the main switchboard at the Government building and told an operator that a bomb had been placed.

The building manager immediately called the police.

The nearby Pineapple Building, which houses the Prime Minister’s office, was not affected.

Workers who returned to their offices after 4 pm were searched at the doorway and had to leave their bags with police guards.

The building was under tight security last night.
