Hoods proved their fighting qualities in Port Moresby cricket on Saturday.
Bundled out for 100 by United on the first day, they came back on Saturday to have United all out for 91.
The bowling of Tau Taugaro, Tony Meadth and Karo Iamo, tight fielding and good tactics by captain Lindsay Rumery proved too much for the United side who had no answer to the pressure.
Iamo, Taugaro and Meadth bowled better then they have ever done before, getting tons of swing and cut to leave the United batsmen bewildered.
Hoods’ place in the final threę is now certain.
Defence, after their good win over Colts on Saturday, will play Steamships next week in a knock-out for third place; although they may have enough points to remain in third place even if they lose.
Unofficial after this round are: Colts 74.59; Hoods 68.08. Defence .66.76 and Steamships 62.58.
The points have not been finalised and De- fence may have a fraction too much for Steamies.
Defence’s win on Saturday was all the better for being with- out Dennis Prider and Kevin Byrne.
They had Colts all out for 141 on the first day and declared on 7/143.
Their hero was Peter Robertson, who hit a fast 42 before being caught by Vele Patu off Charlie Harrison.
Robertson was well supported by Geoff Woolnough, who scored 31. Defence could have been a little lucky as the Colts’ fielding was very slack, several easy catches going begging.
