Newtown Jabaris claim senior men’s title with disciplined cup final win

The Newtown Jabaris have been crowned Senior Men’s Rugby Union champions after overpowering Spartans from Admin Compound in a hard-fought Cup Final at Laiwaden Oval, sealing one of the standout moments of Madang’s long-awaited return to competitive rugby.

The Jabaris’ win capped a two-day tournament that marked a revival for the sport after months of inactivity, with the senior men’s final drawing the largest crowd and the sharpest intensity. Calm under pressure and disciplined across the park, Newtown proved too organised and physical for the Spartans when it mattered most.

Club founder and player Solomon Asivo said the title was built on belief and sacrifice, forged during just three weeks of preparation.

“We believed in what we were doing,” Asivo said after the final. “The training time was short, but the boys were disciplined and committed. They gave everything, and that effort showed on the field.”

The tournament featured teams across three divisions, highlighting depth and emerging talent within the competition. Kalibobo Gunners claimed the Under-16 title, while Lae-based Malac Wanderers lifted the Under-20 trophy. But it was the senior men’s decider that became the focal point of the weekend, with the Jabaris setting the benchmark.

Asivo said unity and work ethic were central to the team’s success.

“The boys showed up every afternoon. We trained hard, pushed each other and built trust. That brotherhood carried us through the final.”

Beyond the result, Asivo said the club had placed strong emphasis on mentoring younger players, particularly those interested in Rugby Sevens.

“One of our goals was to teach the younger boys the game and its values. This tournament showed they’ve learned more than just rugby. They’ve learned discipline and respect.”

During the presentation ceremony, Asivo also echoed calls for improved discipline from players and supporters, warning that poor behaviour had previously disrupted the season.

“For too long, competitions were cancelled because of ill-discipline,” he said. “Now that support is coming back, it’s up to players and fans to lift the standard and protect the game.”

He thanked the Madang Rugby Union for organising the tournament, describing it as a crucial step forward.

“It’s been a year since we last played a proper tournament. Just being back on the field is a blessing. There’s room to improve, but this is a positive start for rugby in Madang.”

For Asivo, the victory also carried deeper meaning. Newtown, he said, is often associated with crime and violence, but the team’s success shows how sport can change lives.

“Some of our boys come from tough backgrounds,” he said. “Through rugby, they’ve stayed away from trouble and focused on something positive. They’re becoming role models now. That’s just as important as winning the cup.”

For the Newtown Jabaris, the Senior Men’s title stands as more than silverware — it is proof of what discipline, unity and opportunity can achieve.
