Major tribal group in Enga Province meets to surrender illegal, high powered guns

The big Yakan tribe, which is made up of more than twenty clans, living in the Ambum local level government area of the Kompiam Ambum District and spreading across to the Laiap local level government area in the Wabag District, has come together with the main aim of surrendering all illegal guns used in local tribal warfare since the 2022 national general elections.

Interim Chairman of the Yakan Peace and Unity Association (YPUA), Mr Japi Ambi, highlighted that the first, formal Yakan tribal leaders meeting with Police Minister and Kompiam Ambum MP John Pundari was held at the Parliament House in Port Moresby, as most educated elites, businessmen, and prominent leaders from the Yakan tribe live and work in the nation’s capital.
