IRC Mt Hagen Office supports education through donation to Mun Primary School

The Internal Revenue Commission (IRC), through its Mt Hagen Office, has donated tables and chairs to Mun Primary School in Dei District, Western Highlands Province, as part of the Commission’s ongoing commitment to supporting education and community development.

The donation was made following the relocation of the IRC Mt Hagen Office to its new premises, resulting in surplus office furniture that was assessed and approved for donation under the IRC’s asset management policy.

Commissioner General of the IRC Sam Loi, said the initiative reflects the IRC’s broader responsibility to give back to communities, particularly schools that play a critical role in shaping the future of Papua New Guinea.

“Education is the foundation of nation‑building. As an institution, the IRC is pleased to support Mun Primary School with essential furniture that will directly benefit students and teachers. This is a practical way of ensuring government assets continue to serve the public good,” Loi said.

Mun Primary School Headmaster, John Wapra, expressed gratitude to the IRC for the timely support, noting that the school has been facing challenges in meeting basic classroom needs due to limited funding.

“Most of the tables and chairs are still in good condition. If we were to purchase new ones ourselves, it would be very costly. This donation has come at the right time and will greatly assist our students,” Wapra said.

Mun Primary School, established in the 1960s, currently has an enrolment of approximately 595 students and 30 teaching staff.

The school has recently been re‑registered with the Education Department as a Level 8 school and reinstated under the government tuition fee subsidy program. However, it continues to face shortages in classroom furniture and learning materials.

Senior Assets Officer from the IRC Claudia Wai, explained that the donation aligns with IRC policy, which allows serviceable assets to be donated to charitable organisations and schools once they reach a certain age.

“These items were no longer required in the new office, but they remain valuable for schools in need. We are pleased they will continue to be used productively,” Wai said.

Loi commended the Mt Hagen IRC Office for demonstrating leadership and community spirit, adding that similar initiatives reinforce public trust in the Commission.

“The IRC is not only about revenue collection; we are also about responsible governance and meaningful community engagement,” he said.
