Heavy rain disrupts PMV services in North Fly

Continuous rainfall over the last five days has caused flooding at Wai Grake (Susu Wara), about five kilometres outside Kiunga town, cutting off motorists and the travelling public.

Public Motor Vehicle (PMV) services have been disrupted, affecting both town routes and highway buses.

Highway buses from Tabubil and nearby villages were forced to stop at one end of the flooded section, pick up passengers, and return.

In the meantime, a Hino Dyna PMV truck made trips through the flooded road, charging K1 per passenger to cross to the other side. Others were left with no choice but to wade through the water before catching another vehicle to continue their journey.

Only high ground clearance and deep wading depth vehicles are currently able to pass through, and the situation depends heavily on the weather. As long as the rain continues, the floodwaters remain.

Despite the disruption, PMV fares remain unchanged: Kiunga to Tabubil at K50, Kiunga to Ningerum at K25, and Kiunga to Rumginae at K10.
