The National Capital District Governor’s Cup has entered a new chapter with the launch of its first-ever Governor’s Netball Cup, aimed at promoting public safety, youth engagement and greater inclusion of women and girls during the festive season.
Speaking at the launch at the Rita Flynn Court, Governor Powes Parkop said the expansion of the long-running tournament reflects a deliberate effort to unite the city and provide positive recreational activities during the high-risk Christmas and New Year period.
The Governor’s Cup, which traditionally focused on rugby league, has in recent years expanded to include soccer and women’s competitions. This year marks the first time netball—an overwhelmingly women-led sport—has been formally included.
Police have welcomed the initiative, viewing the tournament as a strategic partnership to help keep young people off the streets and engaged in organised sport.
Governor Parkop said a total of K360,000 has been allocated to support the inaugural Netball Cup, covering logistics, technical support and operations, with K100,000 set aside for prize money.
He acknowledged the leadership of the Papua New Guinea Netball Federation, tournament officials and participating teams, noting that 20 teams have signed up for the first year.
The Governor challenged more women and girls to participate in future tournaments, pledging increased funding and prizes as participation grows.
He said the expansion of the Governor’s Cup aligns with a broader vision of building a more inclusive city and addressing gender inequality as Papua New Guinea looks ahead to the next 50 years of nationhood.
