Panama is Injecting $22.1 Million into the IMA Budget to Purchase a Half a Million Quintals of Rice and Food

A supplementary additional credit in favor of the Agricultural Marketing Institute (IMA) for an amount of $22,133,574 was authorized by the Cabinet Council on the afternoon of Tuesday, August 4.  These products are offered by the IMA through fairs and stores that it has set up in several provinces of the country.

A quintal is an old unit of weight or mass. Today, one metric quintal equals 100 kilograms (about 220 pounds). In older English and historical trade, it meant a hundredweight (100 to 112 pounds).

Main Uses and Values

Old Local Sizes: Spain, Portugal, and old trade ports had different sizes ranging from 100 to 130 pounds.

Metric Value: 100 kg or 220.46 lb.

Farming and Trade: Farmers in parts of India, Indonesia, and Europe still use it to measure crops like grain. Panama uses it to measure crops like rice.
