Mahershala Ali has some regrets over ‘Blade’ after blunt criticism of Marvel

Mahershala Ali was fulminating when Marvel didn’t make Blade, despite the effort he poured into the half-vampire/half-human role.

But he has some regrets, too.

On GQ’s One More Question podcast, he said he opposed the studio announcing the film so early.

But ultimately, had to follow Marvel’s instructions.

“I went to them in 2019. That was my first meeting,” he recalled.

“We’ll be at Comic-Con by 2019, in the summer. I didn’t want to make no announcements,” Ali stated.

He shared, “I don’t believe in the announcements. Just do the work, and then it’s like, Okay, you announce the work is done, right?”

“But all this anticipatory stuff is not – I’m not a fan of that at all,” the Oscar-winner added.

Ali continued, “But they want to do all that. We did all that and had a story greenlit, and then we don’t have any deliverables.”

“And I can’t deliver until they deliver, right?” he said, adding, “So, that’s not a secret. Otherwise, we’d have a movie.”

However, what frustrated Ali was that he couldn’t work on other projects because his dates were locked in for Blade.

“And then I’m saying no to things in that time because they own my schedule, basically,” he shared.

But Ali’s training didn’t go to waste, as he put it to good use in his new movie, Your Mother, Your Mother, Your Mother.
