INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Indianapolis Department of Public Works crews spent Saturday in the Ravenwood and River Park neighborhoods, as well as the town of Rocky Ripple, working on the massive cleanup needed following historic flooding.

“It’s something where we can give back to the community,” Christopher Harris, a member of the Indy DPW Solid Waste team said. “We know that they had a huge disaster over here, so we decided to make it happen and help them out.”

DPW mobilized at least 50 crew members, who scoured residential streets, removing piles of debris from ruined homes.

“We’ve been out in the community, helping pick up the furniture, pick up trash, just assisting out here as much as we can,” Harris said. “This is pretty much what we do on a daily basis, but on a larger scale.”

Ravenswood homeowners said they appreciated DPW’s efforts.

“I gotta completely rebuild my house, it’s trashed,” Warren Tiffany of Ravenswood said. “They’re going around and they’re picking up this (debris) here, so it’s a good deal.”

“They’ve been picking up stuff and picking up stuff and it’s a big help,” Gary Gleichman said, also of Ravenswood.

By the day’s end, Indy DPW said the initiative was a success.

“It makes me feel good,” Kaylee Pruitt, Administrator at Indy DPW Solid Waste said. “It makes me feel good about our workers, the support that we are providing to the community.”
