INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Just like many Hoosier travelers, officials with the Indianapolis Airport Authority are waiting to find out whether Indianapolis International Airport will see flight cuts due to the government shutdown.
The Federal Aviation Administration said Wednesday that it would reduce air traffic by 10% at 40 high-volume U.S. airports to maintain travel safety as air traffic controllers exhibit signs of strain during the government shutdown.
Airports in New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago are all slated to see flight cuts starting Friday, according to a list distributed to the airlines and obtained by The Associated Press.
Some airport lists posted on social media include the Indianapolis airport, but the IAA told WISH-TV on Thursday morning that it “awaits official information from the FAA” on the 10% reduction in air traffic.
“The IAA is closely monitoring the situation, as these decisions will impact the entire aviation network. The FAA has not yet officially identified which airport markets specifically will be affected. IAA will evaluate any potential impact at IND once official details have been released and we are prepared to address any reduction in air traffic and its impact on passenger travel,” IAA said in a statement.
As of 11 a.m. Thursday, Indianapolis International Airport was under normal operations.
The IAA is encouraging travelers to check with their airlines regarding flight changes, as they are the best source of information.
Here is the full statement from the Indianapolis Airport Authority:
Thank you for your patience as the Indianapolis Airport Authority awaits official information from the Federal Aviation Administration on its planned 10% reduction in air traffic in U.S. markets. The IAA is closely monitoring the situation, as these decisions will impact the entire aviation network.
The FAA has not yet officially identified which airport markets specifically will be affected. IAA will evaluate any potential impact at IND once official details have been released and we are prepared to address any reduction in air traffic and its impact on passenger travel.
At this time, the Indianapolis International Airport is under normal operations. Because airlines will be at the center of impact and because this will have effect on the nationwide aviation network, we strongly urge passengers to check with their airlines regarding flight changes, as they are the best source.
We thank you, again, for your patience as we await official details.
