Two Indians die in Oman after vehicle caught in flash floods

MUSCAT — Two Indian expatriates from the southern state of Kerala were killed and another remains missing after their vehicle was swept away by flash floods in Oman during the Eid Al Fitr holidays.

The deceased have been identified as Yusuf (38), from Kootanad in Thrithala, and Shamla (32), from Kotappadam in Thrithala. Yusuf’s mother, Ramla, is still missing, with search operations ongoing.

The tragedy occurred in Barka in South Al Batinah Governorate when the families were travelling together to celebrate Eid. Their Nissan Patrol, carrying nine passengers, was caught in a sudden surge of floodwaters in a wadi.

Six people, including four children, managed to escape, while Yusuf and Shamla were swept away by the fast-moving current.

Oman’s meteorological authorities said thunderstorms are expected to persist on Sunday, accompanied by hail and strong downdraft winds.
