National award-winning Malayalam actor Salim Kumar dies at 56

KOCHI: Popular Malayalam actor and National Award winner Salim Kumar passed away on Saturday night at the age of 56 after battling health complications.

The veteran actor had been admitted to Amrita Hospital in Kochi following health-related concerns and had been undergoing treatment for multiple ailments over the past several days. Doctors had earlier described his condition as serious, and he was placed on ventilator support.

Salim Kumar was widely regarded as one of Malayalam cinema’s most versatile performers. Beginning his career with comedy roles, he quickly became a household name through his impeccable comic timing, distinctive dialogue delivery, and ability to connect with audiences across generations.

In later years, he successfully transitioned into serious and character-driven roles, earning widespread critical acclaim for his performances. His portrayal in the acclaimed film Adaminte Makan Abu won him the prestigious National Film Award for Best Actor, making him one of the few actors known equally for both comedy and dramatic performances.

Throughout a career spanning decades, Salim Kumar appeared in hundreds of films and received numerous honours, including state and industry awards, for his contribution to Indian cinema.
