Young Norwegian woman jailed in US over expired visa

A Norwegian woman in her 20s who entered the US on a student visa in 2022 was called in for what she thought was an interview in San Diego, California to formalize permanent residency. Instead she was arrested by US President Donald Trump’s controversial Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and held in a detention center.

Her husband claimed she was all but trapped. Norwegian diplomats working at the foreign ministry told Norwegian Broadcasting (NRK) they’re aware of the Norwegian citizen’s arrest. Officials at Norway’s consulate in San Francisco were trying to help but couldn’t go into detail for privacy reasons.

The case has grabbed media attention in California, as another example of the Trump Administration’s crackdown on immigrants and illegal aliens in the US. They have reportedly claimed that her student visa had expired, and thus arrested her even though she’s reportedly now eligible for permanent residency because of her marriage.

NRK has been in contact with the US Embassy in Oslo but its officials refer her case to ICE officials. ICE has no immediate comment. Her husband said he was trying to get her released from the Otay Mesa Detension Center on bail, but there would be no hearing before next week.
