The 2026 World Cup knockout stage continues as 2022 finalists France take on Sweden for a place in the last 16.

Erling Haaland will also be in action as Norway face Ivory Coast in Dallas before co-host nation Mexico play Ecuador.

It is the second day at Wimbledon, with Serena Williams making her comeback against Maya Joint while Britain’s Katie Boulter plays Tyra Caterina Grant in round one.

Here’s what is happening in the sporting world on Tuesday – and where you can catch the action in the UK.

France take on Sweden

France are in World Cup action against Sweden in the last 32 as they look to continue their journey with a win in New Jersey with coverage on ITV1 from 9.15pm.

Les Bleus have looked the team to beat so far in this year’s competition after winning each of their group stage matches against Senegal, Iraq and Norway in convincing fashion.

Elsewhere in the World Cup, Haaland will return to the stage as Norway go head-to-head with Ivory Coast – who have also been impressive – live on BBC One from 5.30pm while co-hosts Mexico play Ecuador in Mexico City on ITV1 in the early hours of Wednesday (1.15am).

Williams returns to Wimbledon

Williams will play at Wimbledon for the first time in four years when she takes on Joint in the first round and there there is plenty of British participation on day two live on BBC Two from 11am and 3pm, while coverage on BBC One will start from 2pm and 7pm.

Williams last played at the All England Club in 2022 when she was beaten by Harmony Tan but will now make her return to singles action, with Britain’s Billy Harris up against Karen Khachanov while Arthur Fery, Jacob Fearnley, Katie Swan and Boulter are all in action.

French Open winner Alexander Zverev also begins his journey for a second grand slam title when he takes on Alexander Blockx.

Australia face West Indies

The group stages of the T20 Women’s World Cup have concluded and the semi-finals of the competition start with Australia against the West Indies live on Sky Sports Cricket and Sky Sports Main Event from 2pm.

Australia have won all five of their group matches and will be favourites heading into the contest but the winner of the semi-final will get the chance to play either England or India, who face off in the second semi-final on Wednesday.

1998: David Beckham was sent off as England were knocked out of the World Cup on penalties by Argentina in the second round.

2002: Ronaldo scored twice as Brazil won the World Cup for the fifth time, beating Germany 2-0 in the final in Yokohama.

2024: Jude Bellingham scored an extra-time winner as England narrowly avoided an embarrassing Euro 2024 exit in the last 16 against Slovakia.
