The Oslo metropolitan area’s train lines are so packed with passengers during the commuter rush that several have fainted on board since the end of the summer holidays. The latest casualty was a young woman heading home on the line to Kolbotn, south of the capital.
Newspaper VG reported that she passed out, apparently from lack of oxygen after being squeezed in between others standing around her. A doctor who happened to be riding on the same train looked after her until she had revived.
The train operator Vy confirmed the new fainting spell, which followed at least three similar incidents last week on over-packed trains between Dal and Oslo. “We’re trying as best we can to double our departures during the rush hours,” Vy spokesperson Kaja Rynning Moen told VG. She admitted to ongoing capacity problems on the busy commuter lines, which have been attributed to a lack of railroad maintenance over the years and late deliveries of new trains.
