Norsk Titanium receives Rolls-Royce order for an RPD titanium engine component

Norsk Titanium has received a purchase order from Rolls-Royce Plc for a titanium component that the engine maker is evaluating as a possible option for its current civil aerospace engine programs. Through the order, the Oslo-based additive manufacturing company will become an approved parts supplier for Rolls-Royce development activities.

The two companies plan to use the experience gained on the project to assess further applications of Norsk Titanium’s technology.

The component is a structural part made from the titanium alloy Ti-6Al-4V. Norsk Titanium produces it at its Technology Center in Norway using Rapid Plasma Deposition, the company’s wire-based directed energy deposition process. Final machining is being carried out in Germany through the project’s supply chain.

“This order represents an important step forward in our relationship with Rolls-Royce,” said Fabrizio Ponte, President and Chief Executive Officer at Norsk Titanium. “It demonstrates both the maturity of our RPD technology and our ability to work within an established aerospace engine supply chain. We believe this phase of exploratory work creates a foundation for identifying additional development opportunities over time.”

Norsk Titanium, which trades on Euronext Growth Oslo and the OTCQX market in the U.S., says that RPD uses less raw material, energy and time than conventional forming methods.

The company reported about 700 metric tons of production capacity and stated that its parts were already flying on commercial aircraft, alongside work for defense and industrial customers.
