Seoul unveils controversial $15 million Korean War memorial in city center

A monument honoring troops from 22 nations that fought under the U.N. Command banner against North Korea during the 1950-53 Korean War was officially unveiled Tuesday in central Seoul, capping a politically contentious project that emerged as a flashpoint in next month’s Seoul mayoral election.

About 170 people, including Seoul acting mayor Kim Sung-bo, ambassadors from nations that participated in the Korean War, veterans and veterans’ group officials attended the opening ceremony for the Garden of Gratitude (감사의 정원) at Gwanghwamun Square at the capital city.

The project funded by the Seoul City Metropolitan Government is estimated to have cost
