Lagos: NANS seeks Police collaboration on students’ safety

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Joint Campus Committee (JCC), Lagos axis, has called for stronger collaboration with the Lagos State Police Command to enhance the safety and welfare of students across the state.

This appeal was made by the Chairman of the group, Quadri Odewunmi, when he led a delegation of student union leaders from various tertiary institutions in the Lagos axis on a courtesy visit to the state’s Commissioner of Police, Tijani Fatai, at the command headquarters in Ikeja.

Odewunmi emphasised the need for sustained partnership between student bodies and security agencies to address issues affecting students, particularly safety on and around campuses. He reaffirmed the association’s commitment to promoting peace, stability, and the protection of students’ rights.

The NANS leadership highlighted its approach to engagement, stressing dialogue and cooperation as key tools in resolving differences that could lead to crises within the student community. According to Odewunmi, the association remains dedicated to constructive engagement while maintaining its responsibility to stand firmly in defence of students when necessary.

The student body also expressed readiness to work closely with the police in advancing initiatives that promote campus security and improve student welfare.

Odewunmi, however, commended the Lagos State Police Command for its quick responsiveness and professionalism in handling matters involving students and other security concerns.

In his response, the Commissioner of Police, Tijani Fatai, welcomed the delegation and underscored the importance of collaboration between law enforcement and student leaders in maintaining public order. He assured the students of the Command’s commitment to supporting their lawful activities and ensuring a safe environment for all.

The meeting ended with both parties reaffirming their resolve to strengthen cooperation and foster a safer, more secure atmosphere for students across Lagos State.
