A Kiwi tourist has been fined after jumping into Rome’s Trevi Fountain.

The 30-year old, who was fully clothed, refused to get out of the ancient landmark when police turned up, The Telegraph reported.

He swims underwater before resurfacing and wiping his hair. After wading in the water, he swims again.

The man was fined 500 Euro ($800) and locals have reacted with fury – they want bigger penalties for misbehaving tourists.

“€500 is small change,” wrote one woman on Facebook. “If it was €5,000 they would think about it for a while.”

Another said: “They think they can do anything they want in Italy. The fine should be €5,000.”

“Immediate arrest and release on bail,” a third said. “If you don’t pay, you shouldn’t get out.”

A ticketed system has been installed for daytime visitors to the landmark, which dates back to 1762.

As they were being escorted away from the area, one of the tourists, a 30-year-old man, wrestled free from the police and jumped into the fountain as the authorities gave chase, a spokesperson for Rome’s Capital Police told CNN.

He was fined 500 euros and banned from visiting the Baroque landmark for life.
