Champions PSV Eindhoven took over at the top of the Eredivisie with a 4-1 home win against Sparta after AZ Alkmaar dropped points for the first time this season.
Sparta took the lead in the Philips Stadion when Milan Zonneveld took advantage of a howler by PSV goalkeeper Matej Kovár, who rushed out of his goal to clear a long ball but miskicked.
The home side were back in front by half-time thanks to a header by Sven Mijnans and Kodai Sano’s first goal for his new club. Mijnans went on to complete a hat-trick in the second half, scoring with both feet.
Feyenoord recovered from their 5-1 defeat to Barcelona in midweek to rack up seven goals at PEC Zwolle.
Coach Giovanni van Bronckhorst said his team played “maybe the best half of football I have ever seen from a team I coach” as Nacho Ferri scored a hat-trick and Anis Hadj Moussa netted twice.
AZ took a first-half lead at home to Willem II through Jordy Clasie, but failed to convert their dominance into further goals and were made to pay when Devin Haen equalised nine minutes from the end.
Germans lift Ajax
Ajax’s new German acquisitions played a key role in their 5-1 win at Fortuna Sittard as Julian Brandt opened the scoring with a fierce shot, while Thilo Kehrer marked his debut with a goal and an assist.
Wout Weghorst scored his first goal since arriving at Twente as his penalty helped his team to a 2-0 win against ADO Den Haag, who are bottom of the table with one point from six matches.
Cambuur Leeuwarden became the first of the newly promoted clubs to notch up a win this season as they beat troubled NEC 3-0, with a double from French winger Ilyes Hamache.
Go Ahead Eagles and Groningen remain in the top half of the table after sharing the points in Deventer, while Utrecht notched up their first win under Anthony Correia thanks to a stoppage-time goal by Dani de Wit against Excelsior.
