Monsoon triggers flood and landslide risks in several districts, DHM issues special alert

Kathmandu, October 2

The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology (DHM) has urged everyone to exercise special caution from October 4–6, as the monsoon is expected to become active.

According to the department, monsoon activity is likely to intensify in Koshi, Madhesh, Bagmati, Gandaki, and Lumbini provinces from October 3–6.

The DHM explained that a low-pressure system developing in the Bay of Bengal will move inland from Odisha, India, towards central India, and its effects are expected to bring rainfall to Nepal.

This rainfall is anticipated to increase the risk of floods, landslides, and inundation, particularly in Kathmandu Valley and surrounding districts of Bagmati Province, including Kavre, Sindhupalchok, Rasuwa, Makwanpur, and Chitwan.

Similarly, districts in Koshi Province such as Sankhuwasabha, Taplejung, Ilam, Jhapa, and Morang are also considered at risk. Districts in Madhesh Province, including Bara, Parsa, Sarlahi, and Rautahat, have been listed as high-risk areas as well.

Due to the high likelihood of sudden river surges in these districts, the department has issued a special bulletin requesting heightened vigilance from October 4–6.

Current analysis indicates that the flow in the Narayani, Bagmati, Kamala, and Koshi rivers, along with their tributaries, may increase significantly, potentially reaching dangerous levels.

In addition, smaller rivers and streams flowing through the Mahabharat and Chure ranges in Koshi, Bagmati, Gandaki, Lumbini, and Madhesh provinces may experience sudden surges.

The heavy rainfall could lead to floods, inundation, landslides, soil erosion, and possible disruptions in road and air transportation.

The DHM has urged the public to stay attentive to regular updated forecasts and early warnings issued by the department and to take necessary precautions to minimize potential damage.
