6.3 magnitude earthquake strikes Afghanistan, casualties reported

Kabul, November 3

A powerful earthquake has struck northern Afghanistan, killing at least eight people and injuring many others.

Authorities fear the death toll could rise as several of the injured are in critical condition. Rescue and search operations are currently underway in the affected areas.

According to the BBC, the 6.3 magnitude quake occurred around 1 am Monday, with its epicenter near Mazar-i-Sharif. Several tall buildings were reported to have collapsed.

Afghanistan’s Health Ministry spokesperson, Sameen Juyenda, said initial reports confirm eight deaths and 180 injuries. Taliban government spokesperson Haji Zaid stated that the worst damage occurred in Sholgara district of Balkh province.
