The Yangon Region Government has announced that, with the launch of new DEMU (Diesel Electric Multiple Unit) trains on the Yangon–Pyay railway line, measures are being taken to close illegal level crossings and remove unauthorized encroachments within the railway right-of-way to ensure the safety of those living along the tracks and those using the crossings.
A meeting regarding this matter was attended by Dr Myo Thaw, Yangon Region’s minister for Electricity, Energy, Industry, and Transportation, as well as department heads, officials, and invited guests.
At the meeting, minister Dr Myo Thaw stated, “As trains will soon be operating at higher speeds, illegal crossings and unauthorized encroachments within the railway zone pose a major safety risk. Therefore, these will be systematically closed and cleared. Crossings that absolutely cannot be closed will be equipped with gate systems.” He added that once encroachments are cleared, Myanma Railways must immediately proceed with fencing and installing warning signs.
Furthermore, the minister urged relevant district administrative committees to urgently draft and submit plans for the closure of these crossings. Additionally, he instructed the relevant committees to collaborate on conducting field inspections within the Right of Way along the railway section and to report back with their findings.
