Vice-President U Nyo Saw presides over the first meeting of the National-Level Coastal Resources Management Central Committee in Nay Pyi Taw, 17 July 2026.
It is necessary to implement the integrated coastal management (ICM) approved in 2024 in Myanmar with the concepts of the green economy, the blue economy and the circular economy, said Vice-President U Nyo Saw, who chairs the National-Level Coastal Resources Management Central Committee.
The Vice-President said so at the first meeting of the central committee at the Forest Department in Nay Pyi Taw yesterday afternoon.
Consequently, the Vice-President continued that the integrated coastal management will effectively initiate the environmental conservation, the economic growth and socioeconomic improvement of the people.
The Vice-President underlined that, as coastal resources are of great importance to ensure food security of the nation, along with the development of the national economy and the long-term development of the nation, efforts are being made to sustain these important resources for future generations.
He stressed the need to emphasize harmonious management for national development and environmental conservation in order to achieve success in the sustainable development goal of the nation.
Regarding the coastal resources management measures, the Vice-President unveiled that the vessel monitoring system (VMS) is being implemented along with setting the non-fishing season and areas in order to reduce illegal fishing. Moreover, the Myanmar Coast Guard was formed, the water pollution law was drafted, and the research and education sectors were improved. Furthermore, efforts were made to achieve success in the activities of plastic and waste management as well as the expansion of mangrove forests along the coastal areas.
In conclusion, the Vice-President urged all members of the Central Committee to strive for conservation of coastal and marine resources and development undertakings in connection with the regional programmes, inviting them to discuss their efforts in sustainable and harmonious development of coastal and marine resources at the meeting.
The director-general of the Forest Department reported on the duties and functions, along with the progress of coastal resources management. Central Committee member Union Ministers, chief ministers and deputy ministers discussed the accomplishments of relevant departments and regions for the management.
The meeting came to an end with the remarks of the Vice-President.
Also present at the meeting were Union Minister for Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation U Min Naung, Union Minister for Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation U Hsan Oo, deputy ministers and directors-general. — MNA/TTA
