Kim Aris, the younger son of Myanmar’s ousted civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi, has issued a renewed demand for the military regime to reveal her exact location and provide independent verification of her physical well-being.

Writing on social media on Wednesday, Aris condemned the regime in Naypyidaw for keeping the 81-year-old Nobel Peace Prize laureate in complete isolation.

He noted that more than five years after the February 2021 military coup, neither her family nor international observers have been granted direct access to confirm her condition.

‘I still do not know where she is’

Aris, who launched the international “Proof of Life” campaign in April, expressed deep frustration over the lack of verified information regarding his mother’s state.

“I have spoken to governments, diplomats and anyone who might know the truth. Yet I still do not know where she is,” Aris wrote in a post on July 29, questioning why the regime keeps the 81-year-old civilian leader hidden from her family and the people of Myanmar.

Although regime media claimed in late April that Aung San Suu Kyi had been relocated from Naypyidaw Prison to house arrest, the authorities have produced no physical evidence or photo documentation to support the claim.

Furthermore, the regime recently rejected a formal request by ASEAN 2026 Chair the Philippines’ Special Envoy Ma. Theresa P. Lazaro to conduct an in-person wellness check.

Plea for global action and warning to ASEAN

During a recent interview with Radio Free Asia (RFA) on July 22, Aris urged global leaders to emulate French President Emmanuel Macron, who publicly called on the regime to respect Suu Kyi’s basic human rights and allow access to proper healthcare and legal counsel.

Aris also issued a direct warning to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) regarding its diplomatic strategy:

• Risk of Normalization: Aris cautioned that any public meetings or diplomatic engagements between ASEAN representatives and regime officials serve to legitimize the military coup that ousted his mother’s government with zero human rights progress.
• Precondition for Dialogue: He urged ASEAN and Western governments to withhold high-level recognition from regime leader Min Aung Hlaing until the military provides verifiable evidence of Aung San Suu Kyi’s health and releases all political prisoners.

Human rights organizations and Myanmar democratic advocacy groups continue to insist that any meaningful assessment of the regime’s compliance must begin with verified proof of safety for Aung San Suu Kyi and the thousands of political prisoners detained across the country.
