The statue of Amadaw Mya Nan Nwe at Botahtaung Pagoda.
The Board of Trustees of the Botahtaung Pagoda has announced that the 119th birthday ceremony of Amadaw Mya Nan Nwe will be held grandly for three consecutive days from 26 to 28 December.
The festivities will begin at dawn with a consecration ceremony for the Maha Zeyi Siddhi Metta Shin Muni Buddha Image, which was originally enshrined by the donor Mya Nan Nwe. This will be followed by the chanting of Pahtan and Metta Sutta, and the offering of breakfast and lunch to 11 monks.
On the third day, to mark the successful completion of the 119th birthday ceremony, 108 ceremonial offerings will be dedicated to the Botahtaung Pagoda at 9:00 am, and a merit-sharing with water dropping ceremony will be held with 11 monks at 9:00 pm.
Devotees are advised not to cut birthday cakes in front of the statue or anywhere inside the shrine and not to solicit donations from pilgrims. Additionally, a ceremonial floating offering will also be included for three days from 29 to 31 December
Mya Nan Nwe was born in 1897 in Mogok into a Shan Sawbwa family. She moved to Yangon in 1942 for missionary work and visited the Botahtaung Pagoda daily. A significant donor to religious causes, she funded the reconstruction of the Botahtaung Pagoda after it was destroyed during World War II. Mya Nan Nwe passed away in 1957. She is revered by many as a great donor and a guardian spirit. Her statue remains enshrined in her own dedicated hall at the Botahtaung Pagoda today. She is also famous among Thai devotees.
