Morocco Chooses Development, and Unity in Sahara Dispute

Morocco is advancing a solution to the dispute over its Sahara through “regional integration, unity, and shared development,” Morocco’s Ambassador to Paraguay, Badreddine Abdelmoumni, stated in an interview with the Paraguayan news agency IP.

The diplomat affirmed that the recent adoption of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797, which reinforces Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara, marks “the beginning of a new era of cooperation and hope for the peoples of the Maghreb.” He emphasized that this milestone reflects growing international support for Morocco’s Autonomy Plan and the Kingdom’s commitment to a pragmatic, political, and sustainable solution.

Abdelmoumni also welcomed Paraguay’s reaffirmation of Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara by Foreign Minister Rubén Ramírez and the country’s support for the autonomy plan.

He noted that over recent years, key international partners—including the United States, France, Spain, Germany, and most recently the United Kingdom—have increasingly backed Morocco’s approach, culminating in the Security Council’s resolution on October 31, 2025.

The ambassador stressed the broader regional significance of the moment, recalling King Mohammed VI’s call for a sincere, fraternal dialogue with Algeria. He also highlighted Paraguay’s decision to open a consulate in Dakhla, which will join more than 30 diplomatic missions already established in Morocco’s southern provinces, calling the move “a strategic choice that reflects a clear recognition of Morocco’s legitimate position.”

This development signals Morocco’s ongoing efforts to consolidate international recognition, strengthen regional cooperation, and promote sustainable development in the Sahara region.
