Skiers and snowboarders – and anyone else who loves spending time in the mountains – will be eagerly awaiting the start of the ski season in Europe’s high-altitude resorts, which open towards the end of November.
If you prefer the warmth of the sun, consider a Moroccan oasis, a beach break in Goa, or a leisurely cruise around the Canary Islands and Madeira. Those who need an early festive fix can fill up on bratwurst and beer in Munich’s gorgeous Christmas market.
If you want to stay closer to home, head to one of the loveliest towns in Sussex and its handy coastal neighbour. Planning a seriously luxurious break? Indulge yourself on the sandy beaches of the Seychelles or spoil yourself in Venice and on a journey on the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express.

France

Morocco

The historic main square of Marienplatz, which is gorgeous enough as it is, puts on its full festive glow with dozens of stalls selling all sorts of Bavarian food, drink and trinkets. Fred. Sussex
