A Most Modest Proposal for Palau’s Leaders

Overview:

“In a sharp, satirical take on Palau’s economic and political landscape, Dudalm Kelulau’s ‘The Silent Majority’ challenges leaders to rethink the nation’s reliance on foreign consultants and military presence. From education to sovereignty, Kelulau argues that Palau risks trading ambition for convenience—and calls on citizens to confront the uncomfortable truths behind prosperity, independence, and democracy.”

Dear Editor, Ranting Satire is good way to say hello…

A Most Modest Proposal for Palau’s Leaders

It is a truth universally acknowledged that a nation of 20,000 souls, blessed with pristine waters, fertile taro patches, and a strategic location so valuable that superpowers salivate over it, must surely be incapable of training its own people or developing its own economy. After all, why bother with such trivialities when we can simply import consultants and soldiers to live at PPR, sip cocktails, and earn more in a month than 60% of Palauans will see in a year?

Therefore, I humbly propose a modest solution: let us abandon the fantasy of economic independence altogether and fully embrace our destiny as the world’s most luxurious military outpost. Instead of striving for training programs or entrepreneurship, we shall train our children to be professional rent collectors of U.S. military crumbs. Forget innovation, forget industry—our future lies in perfecting the art of waiting for the next check.

On Education… Why should we reform our schools when we already follow the U.S. educational system? The very system that produces citizens who believe in Donald J. Trump and elect him president over two more qualified women. Surely, if democracy is about choice, then choosing chaos is the purest form of democracy. Palau, ever eager to imitate, has perfected this art: we are not democratic, we are DemoCrazier.

Our schools teach us not to be employers but employees, not to build but to beg. We sell our names for $500 a month while someone else profits off our backs. What a noble tradition! Why aspire to own the taro patch when you can watch the Bangladeshi expats cultivate it, sell you your own betel nut, and remind you that hard work is for outsiders?

On Economy… It is often said that “a rising tide lifts all boats.” In Palau, however, the tide lifts only yachts. The rest of us cling to canoes, watching the wealthy sail past while we argue over whose land title entitles us to scraps of millions. Meanwhile, the consultants, those high priests of development, assure us that prosperity is just around the corner—provided we pay them handsomely to tell us so. While we ignore our own.

On Sovereignty… What greater honor than to host the U.S. military, protecting its shores from our backyard? We provide the land, the view, and the strategic location, while America provides… well, America provides America. In return, we receive the privilege of being a footnote in their defense budget. Truly, this is the pinnacle of sovereignty: to be sovereign enough to argue over land titles, but not sovereign enough to decide what happens to them.

In conclusion, I submit my modest proposal: let us stop pretending. Let us embrace our role as the world’s most scenic dependency. Let us teach our children not to dream of entrepreneurship, but to master the art of subsistence with dignity. Let us celebrate consultants as our new aristocracy, expats as our new farmers, and crumbs as our new feast.

For in this Tale of Two Cities—the city of the rich and the city of the poor—Palau has chosen its place. And if democracy means anything at all, surely it means the freedom to sell ourselves short.
