England manager quietened talk of possible disruption from Mexico fans by praising the reception his team received as they arrived in Mexico City ahead of Monday’s cruch World Cup 2026 last-16 clash.
Earlier in the tournament Ecuador had complained to Fifa about the noise made by Mexican fans outside their hotel ahead of their round of 32 meeting with the home supporters blaring music from loudspeakers, revving up motorbikes and honking horns into the early hours of the morning before the game.
There were concerns of similar disruption for England and their preparation with Fifa implementing enhanced security measures for the team. These included members of Mexico’s National Guard lining the entrance to England’s hotel and police officers in riot gear outside.
But, Tuchel dismissed the concerns over England’s treatment and explained that the reception he and his squad have received since landing in Mexico has been ‘friendly and respectful’.
Speaking on the day before England’s clash with Mexico, the Three Lions manager praised the Mexican supporters as well as Fifa for the increased organisation.
“We had no issues tonight and I think Fifa took care of the situation,” Tuchel said. “We have security around the hotel so we expect a good night’s sleep.
“I don’t want to talk about problems that don’t exist yet. If they come, we will accept them. The best way to approach is to be relaxed and calm. We have a six o’clock kick-off, so if we miss some hours of sleep we will have time to get some other hours in the late morning.
“What I experienced until now was very respectful and emotional and very supportive towards our teams, so we are very respectful towards everyone. We expect to be treated with respect and that was the case.
“It was even nicer than I expected.”

England take on Mexico in the last-16 at the famous Azteca Stadium. The atmosphere is expected to by hostile for the Three Lions as home supporters cheer on their team.
Not only will the Three Lions have to contend with a fanbase enthused by confident, winning performances from the Mexico team but they must also overcome the history of the stadium itself and the physical exertions of playing at altitude.
“This will be a proper World Cup match,” Tuchel added.
“We are in an iconic place, an iconic stadium and a massive knockout game. It is a big stage and we feel it. It makes you sharper and brings the best out of you.”
