P1 Bible translation celebration held
The Marshallese people on July 25 became the second group in Micronesia (Kosraeans were the first) who now can read the world’s best seller — the Bible — in its entirety in their own language. Copies of the Bible were presented to members of the Translation Review Committee and the translators and the Editorial Committee in an ecumenical celebration and dedication of the new translation held at the Uliga Protestant Church. The joint translation work by the churches in the Marshalls (United Church of Christ, Catholic Church, Assembly of God, and the Seventh Day Adventist Church) began 15 years ago. Project Coordinator for the Marshallese Bible Translation Project Alice Buck made the presentation. In translating the Bible, the translation team was using the idea of translating in “dynamic equivalents.” Instead of translating word for word, the translating is done in concept or ideas. The translators were Julian Riklon (the only full-time translator), Ferdinand Emiz (deceased), Togo Langrine, Rev. Pijja Matauto, Kunio Lemari, Robert William, Russell Edwards, Rev. Jude Samson, Rev. Jori Lokboj, and Moses Samuel. Rev. Harold Hanlin, I-jin Loh, and Fr. Leonard Hacker, SJ, were the consultants. Proofreading and typists were Jonnadrik Jelke and Mary Matthew. Reviewers of the Old Testament were Birash Joash, Alfred Capelle, Cecilia deBrum, Conrad Anni, Dreball Jelke, Elliot Lang, Rev. Erakrik Samuel, Rev. Hansen Lalimo, Helles Ritok, Rev. Jude Samson, Kanet Zedekiah, Maas Hoone, Morris Jetnil and Namu Hermius (deceased). The New Testament was reviewed by Kabua Kabua, Ajidrik Bien, Atlan Anien, Billy Sawej, Birash Joash, Rev. Bourn Heine (deceased), Rev. Chutaro Gushi (deceased), Eliu Jibambam, Isaac Lanwi (deceased), Rev. James Milne (deceased), Rhine Brain, Fr. Thomas Donohoe and Tom Jetnil.

P1 The 55 minute miracle!
If word gets out to the Cook Islands, they’ll be cringing. If the beefy Hawaiians now strutting their stuff to the South Pacific on the Hokule’a read about it, they’ll contemplate ceding their state to the RMI. And when Marshallese scattered around the world find out about it, their breasts will swell and their heads will swelter in a warm glow of justifiable esteem. At issue is the results of the first trial runs of the Enewetak-built stark-styled lean and mean “walap,” the sleek definition of what sailing ought to be. According to President Amata Kabua’s personal marine consultant John Slattebo, the performance of the yet-to-be named Enewetak canoe, which has been undergoing trials these past weeks, far exceeds expectations. “Not only are we amazed at the speed of the canoe, we are also frankly surprised at the number of people it can carry while steaming along at approximately 12 knots,” he said. In one run, the fleet Enewetak canoe boarded from Gateway beach to the town side of the airport, then shot across the lagoon to a small islet past Enemanit before arcing home again to Gateway in under 55 minutes.

The big news out of Alabama is that five boats are being outfitted to come to Majuro for longline service here in the Marshalls. The new longliners will be owned by Charles Domnick, Masao Capelle, Wally Milne and Sam Leon.

P1 Pegasus rocket washes onto Mili
A booster rocket from a mid-air launch at Kwajalein in June washed up in Mili Atoll last week, prompting the RMI government to seek assistance of the US government in removing the large object.
P3 Coop’s Nico tops Xavier test
A Majuro Coop School student achieved the highest score out of 800 students from all over Micronesia who took the Xavier High School entrance test recently. Recent Coop eighth grade graduate Andre Nicholas “Nico” Nevado ranked number one in overall score on the test, according to a Xavier High School official.
