The Labour Party has accused the PN of misappropriating money its workers paid in tax and national insurance contributions.

In a brief statement on Sunday, Labour highlighted comments made by Nationalist Party leader Alex Borg in which he acknowledged the party was behind on NI payments.

Borg added that workers have nothing to worry about as the government “steps in as a guarantor in such situations”. He was speaking during a phone-in interview with academic and Campus FM host Andrew Azzopardi.

Audited accounts the party released last week indicate that the PN owes well over €500,000 in tax and NI contributions for its workers.

Labour said Borg’s statement was “extremely serious” as it indicated the PN had misappropriated funds, which is a crime.

“This statement shows that the Nationalist Party cannot be trusted with the governance of the country,” Labour said. “After five years of breaching the law on party financing, it is now emerging that they went so  far as to steal the contributions of their own workers to cover up for the poor financial decisions they made over the years.”

Labour said the PN seemed to be accepting the fact that taxpayers would be picking up the bill for its unpaid contributions and accused its political rival of financial negligence.

“This is the Nationalist Party. It uses and discards its own workers, let alone what it would do to the people if it were ever entrusted with running the country,” Labour said.
