‘Graphic’ video to warn of drink-driving dangers

A video that is too graphic for television will make the rounds across Malta’s towns to promote safe driving and discourage driving under the influence of drink or drugs.

A Transport Malta truck with a small cinema inside will be making its way across Malta showing the five-minute clip.

The production is about a young girl who is singing on stage but her parents’ seats are empty – their absence caused by a traffic accident. It includes depictions of blood and tackles themes of loss because of drink driving and careless driving.

A live re-enactment of a tragic accident because of drink driving was performed at the beginning of an event launching the video.

Jason Zerafa who directed the re-enactment as well as the video said the project left a mark on him.

“I have dealt with tragic themes and even blood, but this was different. I kept telling myself these are realities that often happen,” the director said.

Speaking after the preview, transport minister Chris Bonett said he wanted to have something “which is a punch in the gut for those who see it”.

“We talk a lot about deaths and accidents but the conversation often stays on a superficial level. This hits home,” he said.

“I’m asking you please push this message to promote road safety”, Bonett pleaded to media and influencers.

He said that besides speeding and driving under the influence, using mobile phones while driving was another serious threat to road safety.

“Mobile phones are becoming an addiction, it’s almost worse than drink driving,” he said.
