Prof. Frank Bezzina has been nominated as the sole candidate in the upcoming election for Rector of the University of Malta.
The university confirmed that Prof. Bezzina received 15 nominations from Council members before the official deadline of today noon.
An extraordinary meeting of the University Council will now take place on Thursday 26th March, where members will vote by secret ballot to elect the next Rector for a five-year term.
Since he is the only candidate, Prof. Bezzina must obtain at least 50% plus one vote from the members present to be elected.
During the meeting, the candidate will present his vision and answer questions from Council members.
Prof. Bezzina currently serves as Pro-Rector for International Development and Quality Assurance at the University of Malta. He previously held roles including Dean and Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Economics, Management and Accountancy and Head of the Department of Management.
Beyond academia, he is a non-executive director of the Central Bank of Malta and previously served as acting President of Malta between June 2022 and March 2024.
The new Rector will succeed Prof. Alfred J Vella, who has held the role for the past decade.
Do you think the University of Malta should have more than one candidate for Rector?
