‘Discussion, Not Imposition’ – Alex Borg Disagrees With Scerri Herrera Chief Justice Nomination

Opposition Leader Alex Borg has criticised Prime Minister Robert Abela for moving forward with a parliamentary motion to appoint a new Chief Justice, despite not having received a clear response from the Opposition on the nomination.

“Discussion, not imposition. I just wrote to the Prime Minister and reminded him that I am still waiting for a response from him regarding the name of another person I proposed for the position of Chief Justice. I also reminded him that in our last private meeting, I had already informed him that there would be no agreement on the name I proposed. Despite this, Robert Abela went ahead and presented a motion in Parliament for a person he already knew would not have the required consent. This is certainly not in the best interest of justice for a sitting judge to be subjected to such a situation,” said Borg.

Borg’s comments come amid ongoing tensions between government and opposition over the nomination of Justice Consuelo Scerri Herrera, with the Prime Minister insisting the process will move forward unless the opposition provides a definitive yes or no.
