Deli & Co has issued a right of reply after public health authorities announced they were investigating a cluster of four Hepatitis A cases linked to the Qormi establishment.

Earlier today, health authorities advised anyone who consumed food from Deli & Co between 17th and 25th June to remain alert for symptoms while investigations continue.

In response, Deli & Co said it has not been presented with any evidence establishing a direct link between the reported cases and its establishment. The company also confirmed that one employee was diagnosed with Hepatitis A on 4th July, but said the individual had been abroad before the diagnosis and last worked at the premises on 25th June.

Below is Deli & Co’s full statement:

Deli & Co refers to the recent notice concerning an alleged Hepatitis A case purportedly linked to our establishment.

First and foremost, the health, safety and wellbeing of our customers and employees remain our highest priorities. We take our food safety and hygiene obligations extremely seriously and have consistently operated in compliance with all applicable legal and regulatory requirements.

At the outset, we wish to emphasize that, to our knowledge, no evidence has been presented establishing a direct link between the reported Hepatitis A cases and our establishment.

While it is correct that one member of staff was diagnosed with Hepatitis A on 4 July 2026, it is important to note that this individual had been abroad prior to that date and that his last day of work at our premises before the diagnosis was 25 June 2026.

Upon receiving the diagnosis, the employee did not return to work and remained absent until the competent health authorities expressly confirmed that he was fit to resume his duties. Furthermore, as soon as the establishment became aware of the situation, all appropriate measures were immediately implemented in accordance with public health guidance. In addition, another employee, despite testing negative, observed the recommended incubation period in line with the advice provided by the health authorities.

For purposes of clarification all employees are Maltese.

While we fully appreciate the importance of investigating any potential public health concern, we respectfully submit that any allegation of causation should be supported by objective evidence and verified findings rather than assumptions. Unsubstantiated allegations risk creating unnecessary public concern and may unfairly prejudice businesses and individuals. We are also surprised and disappointed that, although this matter dates back to the beginning of July 2026, the public notice is only being issued now, more than a month after the relevant events occurred.

Notwithstanding the absence of any evidence demonstrating a connection between the reported cases and our establishment, Deli & Co confirms that it has consistently implemented and maintained comprehensive food safety, sanitation and hygiene procedures. These measures form an integral part of our daily operations and are regularly monitored to ensure full compliance with applicable standards.
