Alex Borg Says He’ll Resign If Metro Isn’t Operational Within 5 Years

PN leader Alex Borg has pledged that he would resign as Prime Minister if elected and the metro line proposed by the Nationalist Party is not operational within five years.

The commitment was made during the Il-KAŻIN x Times of Malta debate after journalist Mark Laurence Zammit asked Borg directly whether he would step down if the project is not completed within the timeframe. Borg replied “yes” unequivocally.

The proposed PN metro project would include an 11.5km underground line connecting the airport to Pembroke and is estimated to cost around €1.4 billion. Borg insisted the project is “planned and doable” despite concerns surrounding procurement, planning and construction timelines.

“That’s how sure I am of our team of experts and our plan. I am putting my career on the line,” Borg said during the debate.

Prime Minister Robert Abela declined the invitation to participate in the debate.
