Young performers take centre stage in recital celebrating music, mentorship and inclusion | Entertainment

THREE young performers took the spotlight at a recital celebrating not only musical talent, but also the power of mentorship, perseverance and inclusion.

Held at the Royal Selangor Visitor Centre, Celebrating Music, Mentorship & Friendship featured vocal students from Crescendo Music & Dance Studio under the guidance of acclaimed vocal educator Liow Jun Yi.

The afternoon recital saw performances by Gwen Lee, Glenys Lam and Lucas Law, accompanied by collaborative pianist Lau Jo Yee, with the trio presenting a repertoire that ranged from classical favourites and contemporary songs to musical theatre pieces.

Gwen impressed audiences with her expressive delivery and polished vocal technique, while Glenys showcased her vocal strength and confidence on stage.

Lucas, a young performer on the autism spectrum, delivered a performance reflecting his growth and dedication through years of vocal training.

His journey has included taking on a leading role in the local musical production Life is 2.0, highlighting the role of inclusive arts education in helping neurodivergent performers develop their confidence and creative abilities.

The recital also featured two crowd favourites — Beauty and the Beast, performed by Gwen and Liow, and A Whole New World, performed by Glenys and Lucas — which received warm applause from the audience.

Speaking after the performance, Liow said the recital was not simply about showcasing musical ability, but also about celebrating the relationships built between teachers and students throughout their artistic journeys.

“Music is about more than performance. It is about nurturing confidence, resilience and the joy of sharing one’s gifts with others,” he said.

“Watching these young performers grow has been one of the most rewarding parts of teaching.”

The recital reflected Crescendo Music & Dance Studio’s efforts to nurture young musicians while creating a more inclusive space for students from diverse backgrounds to explore and develop their talents through the performing arts. – July 26, 2026
