Two former Chinese defence ministers sentenced to death after corruption charges | World

TWO former Chinese defence ministers, Wei Fenghe and Li Shangfu, were each sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve on corruption charges on Thursday, Xinhua reported.

The sentences were handed down separately by China’s Military Court.

Both Wei and Li are also former members of the Central Military Commission and former members of the State Council.

According to the court’s ruling, Wei was found guilty of accepting bribes, while Li was convicted of accepting and offering bribes.

They were also deprived of political rights for life, and all their personal property was confiscated.

The court’s ruling stated that no further reduction of sentence or parole will be allowed after their sentences are commuted to life imprisonment in accordance with the law, once the two-year reprieve period ends. – May 8, 2026
