Elderly man killed in Ayer Tawar robbery as family withholds news from injured widow | Malaysia

THE family of an elderly man who was killed during a violent home invasion robbery in Jalan Melayu, Ayer Tawar, has not yet informed his wife of his death, as she continues to receive treatment in hospital for serious injuries sustained in the same attack.

The victim’s eldest son, identified only as Teh, said the family is concerned that breaking the news could further endanger his mother’s condition.

“We still do not dare tell our mother that our father died from his injuries,” he said, according to China Press.

“She has asked about his condition, and we only told her that he was injured. We may tell her in one or two days,” he added.

Teh was speaking to reporters at the mortuary of Hospital Raja Permaisuri Bainun, where he was making arrangements to claim his father’s remains.

He said his father suffered fatal head injuries during the attack, while his right hand was also fractured.

In the incident, an intruder broke into the couple’s home in what police believe was a robbery attempt targeting valuables, which escalated into a fatal assault on the elderly man and serious injuries to his wife.

When asked whether police had provided updates, Teh said officers had acted quickly to investigate but the family had not yet been informed of any major developments.

The victim’s body will be taken back to Ayer Tawar for funeral arrangements.

Police earlier confirmed that an 84-year-old man died while receiving treatment, while his wife remains in serious condition following the attack.

Manjung district police chief Assistant Commissioner Hasbullah Abd Rahman said police received an emergency call regarding the incident at 5.30am.

Initial investigations found that the couple were assaulted inside their home by a man who had broken in and used a hard object to attack them.

“The suspect fled with two mobile phones and a purse belonging to the victims before escaping from the scene,” he said in a statement.

Hasbullah said neighbours who heard commotion rushed to assist the victims and transported them to Seri Manjung Hospital for treatment.

“However, the 84-year-old male victim was pronounced dead while receiving treatment, while his wife remains seriously injured,” he said.

He added that a post-mortem would be conducted to determine the exact cause of death.

Following intelligence-led investigations, police arrested a 27-year-old man at 7.45pm on the same day.

“We also recovered several items believed to belong to the victims,” he said, adding that the suspect has been remanded for seven days starting the following day.

The case is being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder, which carries the death penalty or imprisonment of between 30 and 40 years and not less than 12 strokes of the cane if the death penalty is not imposed.

It is also being investigated under Section 394 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt while committing robbery, which carries a maximum prison sentence of 20 years and whipping upon conviction.

Police have urged witnesses or anyone with information to contact the Manjung district police headquarters operations room at 05-688 6222 or the WhatsApp hotline at 017-682 8005 to assist investigations. – May 9, 2026
