AMK calls for apology over alleged remarks on Prophet’s companions | Malaysia

ANGKATAN Muda KEADILAN (AMK) has urged PAS leader Nik Muhammad Zawawi Salleh to issue a public apology over remarks he allegedly made about the early lives of the Prophet Muhammad’s companions, describing the statements as misleading and disrespectful.

In a statement today, AMK vice-chief Nadia Nazri referred to a viral video said to show the former PAS Syura Ulama Council secretary making claims during a political ceramah over the weekend.

Among the remarks drawing criticism were assertions that Abu Bakar had been a “loan shark who oppressed the poor”, and that Umar ibn al-Khattab had lived a violent and immoral life before embracing Islam.

“The companions of the Prophet are not tools to inflame political stages. They are the generation that served as the bridge between revelation and the ummah,” Nadia said.

She stressed that if the statements were indeed made as reported, they risk distorting public understanding and undermining the stature of key figures in Islamic history.

“Names as great as Saidina Abu Bakar and Saidina Umar cannot be invoked carelessly, let alone portrayed in a way that diminishes their dignity in Islamic history,” she added.

Nadia also raised concern that such remarks were attributed to a senior figure within PAS’s religious leadership structure, questioning the level of scholarship and decorum being projected in contemporary Islamic political discourse.

AMK, she said, is calling on Nik Zawawi to apologise openly, retract the statements, and correct the historical narrative presented to the public.

“As a Member of Parliament and a senior religious figure, he cannot simply take shelter behind claims of context, video edits or misunderstanding,” she said.

Nadia further pressed PAS to state its official position on the issue, suggesting that the matter be handled internally.

“When statements are made publicly and cause confusion among the rakyat, the clarification must also be made publicly,” she said.

She emphasised that errors of this nature could not only mislead but also erode proper adab towards revered figures in Islam.

“Islam does not require excessive rhetoric. It demands knowledge, integrity, responsibility and respect,” she said.

“Do not let political zeal turn the history of the Prophet’s companions into collateral damage.” – May 22, 2026
